The Plague storyline

Few seem to remember this, but there was a short-lived experiment by SOE that involved a story line about a plague or disease running rampant through Tunaria. I believe you got the plague by simply coaching through a town that was infected, though you might have had to actually fight something with the plague. Once a few players got it, s* hit the fan.

The plague was transferable while fighting. Every time you swung your sword, a proc animation would go off showing your character casting the plague on the mob. Then, the newly infected mob, would cast it back to whoever it was hitting. Meaning that if 1 person in the group has the plague, eventually everyone in the group would have the plague. As you can imagine, this thing spread fast.

The only way to cleanse your character was to die. Besides the annoying proc animation, with its casting sounds, the plague debuffed CHA and INT. (This might not be 100% accurate.) Essentially healers and casters were up a creek.

Judging by the lack of recollection from the people I have spoken with about the plague, I’m guessing the event happened in late 2004 or early 2005. It lasted two or three months before SOE scrapped the idea. It was easily one of the biggest botched storylines in the game’s history that did more to anger players than build their interest.

I remember the plague 😮 was annoying. I remember people always dying to the ambassador by the arena in freeport to get rid of it.

The plague of Bertoxxulous is what you are referring to. It was part of the opening events of PoD, along with the Springview healers and related quests. I loved that whole thing. One of my favorite times in EQOA.

Also, I think debuffed just about every stat.

Yeah I’m not sure I was playing higher level stuff during that time. I just remember the animation would always F up my sound.

yeah, it always screwed with the sound and also the graphic made it hard to see what you were fighting. I like it though, cuz it was like a real epidemic and spread like crazy. Pretty novel idea on the devs part. Made the world a more living atmosphere.

Yeah I definitely agree that it truly became a plague. I thought it was kind of funny when you would join a group and your character had the plague but no one else did. They would instantly boot you or tell you to die and rez.

ya, that was the Bertoxxulan Pox, or Bertox Pox for short. If I remember correctly, it debuffed int, cha, and dex by 10 points. You could also get it from mobs in game, which meant that some folks would hit a mob and then not kill it when it ran away, and when the mob reset, it would have the pox. The pox was in the game long after the storyline was over.

The cleric’s PoD ability cured the pox (along with other poisons/infections). Of course, by the time I aquired it, the Pox had pretty well run it’s course.
